As a dermatology clinic, our mission is to empower you to notice early warning signs of melanoma - because catching it early can save lives. A trusted framework we use is the ABCDE mnemonic: A – Asymmetry: If one half of the mole doesn’t mirror the other, it raises concern. B – Border irregularity: The spot has an irregular or poorly defined border. C – Colour variation: The spot has multiple colours including brown, black or unusual colours like white, red or blue. D – Diameter: Most melanomas are bigger than 6mm or the width of a pencil eraser when diagnosed (but can be smaller). E – Evolving: The spot is changing over time, especially rapidly within weeks or months. We also emphasize the “Ugly Duckling” sign: a mole or lesion that looks noticeably different from the rest of your moles (even if it doesn’t meet all ABCDE criteria) should also be evaluated promptly. Why this matters: Melanoma accounts for thousands of new cases annually in Canada, and survival rates are dramatically higher when detection occurs early.
